LinkedIn Rolls Out Verified AI Skill Levels for User Profiles
LinkedIn has introduced a system to display verified AI skill levels on user profiles, shifting away from self-reported badges. The proficiency assessments come directly from partner companies developing the AI tools, aiming to offer employers a more reliable measure of candidates' abilities.
LinkedIn has launched a new feature allowing users to display verified proficiency levels in AI coding tools on their profiles, in a move designed to provide a more objective representation of user expertise. Unlike the previous system, which relied on individuals self-reporting their skills and earning endorsements, this update draws on direct assessments from the companies that develop the AI tools themselves.
To implement this system, LinkedIn has partnered with firms including Replit, Lovable, Descript, and Relay.app. New integrations are in development with Microsoft-owned GitHub and with Zapier, with the company indicating a broader rollout in future. These collaborations form the basis for ongoing evaluation of AI-related skills.
Under the new model, users interact directly with AI tools such as those provided by Replit or Lovable. The respective companies assess users’ performance, benchmarking skill levels relative to others. The resulting proficiency ratings—such as “bronze” for Lovable’s “vibe coding”, numerical levels for Replit, or “intermediate” for Relay.app’s “AI Agent Builder”—are then displayed automatically on LinkedIn profiles. This distinguishes the new system from manually entered skill claims or peer endorsements.
LinkedIn notes that these verified proficiency levels are dynamic. As users gain more experience and interact with the tools over time, their ratings adjust in real time to reflect improved performance and ongoing usage.
The launch of this feature comes amid significant shifts in the workplace driven by automation and AI adoption, trends that have contributed to job displacement in some sectors. Professionals have responded with a mix of enthusiasm and caution, seeking to leverage AI-related skills while also voicing concerns over potential job losses.
Pat Whealan, LinkedIn’s head of career products, emphasized the growing importance of verified AI skills for recruiters and hiring managers. "This is less about replacing any of those other existing signals, and more about showing new ways that people are doing work," Whealan explained. He highlighted the value of giving both employers and peers a verifiable indicator that users are actively engaging with these advances in technology.
As AI tools continue to evolve and reshape professional landscapes, verified digital credentials such as these aim to help employers discern genuine skill from mere self-promotion, streamlining the hiring process and potentially setting new standards for other professional networks.
