Facebook Adds AI Features to Attract Younger Users

These updates are part of a broader strategy to modernize the platform and enhance user options for self-expression. The rollout follows ongoing challenges in retaining a youthful audience.

Facebook has announced a series of artificial intelligence-driven features aimed at increasing its appeal to younger users. The updates, which include animated profile pictures, image restyling tools, and new animated backgrounds for text posts, are positioned as efforts to broaden options for self-expression on the platform.

The new animated profile picture function allows users to add dynamic effects to static photos, such as creating waving gestures or virtual party hats. This feature employs AI techniques to analyze and animate uploaded images, recommending clear, front-facing photos of a single subject for the best results. Additional animation options are planned for introduction later in the year.

For images shared through Stories or resurfaced via Memories, Facebook is rolling out 'Restyle,' a tool powered by Meta AI, the company’s proprietary artificial intelligence. 'Restyle' leverages text-to-image generation, allowing users to transform photos using either text prompts or preset artistic themes like "anime," "glowy," or "ethereal." Users have flexibility to adjust mood, lighting, color, and even apply virtual backdrops, such as beaches or urban environments. Text-to-image AI uses deep learning models to reinterpret input images or prompts, enabling creative modification and personalization.

Animated backgrounds for text posts are another addition, giving users access to still and dynamic scenes like falling leaves or ocean waves. Users can access these new backgrounds via a rainbow 'A' icon, with seasonal and themed designs anticipated in future updates.

The move comes as Facebook faces ongoing challenges in attracting and retaining members of younger generations. With approximately 2.1 billion daily active users globally, the company has identified declining engagement among youths as a key area of concern. In response, Facebook has not only introduced AI-based features but also implemented interface redesigns and functions aimed at matching offerings from other social media competitors. These include a friends-only feed, unique display names within Groups inspired by platforms such as Reddit, and the revival of the classic 'poke' feature as a button on user profiles.

Meta, Facebook’s parent company, maintains that these innovations are part of its broader strategy to leverage AI in enhancing creative user experiences and adapting to a competitive digital landscape.
