Six members of the twelve-person founding team at xAI, the artificial intelligence startup led by Elon Musk, have now departed, marking a pivotal shift in the company's leadership during a period of heightened operational and legal challenges. The most recent resignations—by co-founders Yuhuai (Tony) Wu and Jimmy Ba—were announced on X, formerly Twitter, within a day of each other this week.

Wu, whose resignation was made public on Monday evening, shared his appreciation for the team, emphasizing the close relationships built during his tenure. Jimmy Ba, who reported directly to Musk, confirmed his own departure the following day, expressing gratitude for the company’s ambitious mission and for Musk’s leadership in uniting the founding team.

These latest departures bring the total number of founding team members to leave xAI to six, with five of those exits occurring within the past year. The departures highlight ongoing turbulence within the nascent company, which has sought to carve out a significant share in the competitive generative AI sector.

Notable exits in the past twelve months include infrastructure lead Kyle Kosic, who joined OpenAI in 2024; Igor Babuschkin, who left to create a venture firm; Greg Yang, a Microsoft alumnus, who cited health reasons for his departure last month; and Christian Szegedy, a former Google engineer, who left in February 2025.

The company’s flagship product, Grok—a chatbot leveraging advanced AI techniques—has faced scrutiny after recent technical modifications to its image-generation tools were linked to a marked increase in deepfake pornography on the xAI platform. These incidents have led to legal consequences, putting further pressure on the remaining leadership to address safety and ethical considerations in their products. Deepfakes, which use generative AI to create manipulated images or videos, remain a serious challenge for AI companies striving to balance innovation and responsibility.

xAI’s trajectory has frequently mirrored industry-wide debates over the governance, commercialization, and rapid development of generative AI. However, the spate of high-level departures, combined with recent product controversies, raise questions about the company’s stability and future direction in a landscape increasingly defined by both technical breakthroughs and regulatory scrutiny.

The departures come at a time of intense competition in AI, with established firms and startups vying for top talent and technological leadership. As xAI continues to develop and refine its offerings, the company will need to reassess its strategy and address potential vulnerabilities stemming from both turnover and technological risk.
