Spotify has announced a significant milestone, reporting 751 million monthly active users in its latest quarterly update. This figure marks an 11% increase compared to the previous year, with the music streaming giant adding 38 million new users during the fourth quarter. The number of paying subscribers also rose 10% to 290 million over the same period.

The company’s total quarterly revenue reached €4.53 billion ($5.39 billion), representing a 7% year-on-year increase. Subscription revenue climbed by 8%, while revenue from the ad-supported segment declined by 4% to €518 million ($616.6 million). The gross margin improved by 83 basis points to 33.1%.

Spotify attributes its robust user growth to its year-end "Wrapped" campaign, which engaged more than 300 million users and generated 630 million social media shares across 56 languages. Enhanced features on the free, ad-supported tier also played a role in attracting new listeners.

Beyond its core music streaming service, Spotify continues to diversify its offerings. The platform now includes podcasts, audiobooks, and even physical bookstores. Recent additions feature music videos, video podcasts, greater social interaction options such as group chats, and the ability for users to share their listening activity. Users are also able to book concert tickets and explore background information about songs.

Artificial intelligence (AI) has become central to Spotify’s product roadmap. Notable AI-driven features include an AI-powered DJ, which curates and presents personalized playlists, and AI-generated playlists tailored to individual user preferences. Users are also able to exclude specific songs from recommendation algorithms, providing greater control over their listening experience. AI recommendation systems leverage machine learning to analyse user behaviour and fine-tune content suggestions, a technology that underpins much of Spotify’s engagement strategy.

To boost profitability, Spotify has implemented subscription price increases across the United States and Europe. The company has also made new features available to users on the free tier, such as the ability to search for and select specific songs.

Leadership at Spotify has also changed, with Gustav Söderström and Alex Norström recently appointed as co-CEOs. Looking ahead, the company projects growth to 759 million users and 293 million paying subscribers in the coming quarter.

Spotify’s steady expansion reflects both the growing demand for audio streaming and the increasing role of AI in personalizing and enhancing user experiences.
