X Reverses Vertical Video Cropping After User Criticism
X will discontinue its practice of cropping vertical videos in response to user backlash over the recent video player redesign. The update comes as X expands its video features and incorporates AI tools, highlighting ongoing challenges around user experience and content moderation.
X, the social media platform formerly known as Twitter, has announced it will halt the automatic cropping of vertical videos following immediate user criticism of its redesigned video player. The change was detailed by Head of Product Nikita Bier, who addressed feedback that the new immersive video player—recently rolled out to iOS users—forced all videos into a tightly cropped, full-screen format, sometimes distorting wider footage and removing the option to view content in its original aspect ratio.
The revamped player allows users to expand videos with a single tap and swipe up to move to the next video, mirroring the user interface of rival platforms like TikTok. X said the overhaul was necessary as the previous video experience had become outdated, and the new system aligns with the industry-wide shift toward mobile-first, vertical video consumption seen on platforms such as TikTok, Instagram Reels, and Disney+.
Bier initially defended the cropping choice, reasoning that it incentivized users to post square videos, which are more suitable for mobile viewing. However, user feedback highlighted a divide between the desire for a consistent vertical video format and the need to preserve creators' original framing. One commenter remarked, “This UI sucks so bad. Let me just watch full-scale videos.”
Responding to these concerns, Bier stated that X would stop cropping vertical videos, seeking to balance the platform’s mobile-centric focus with respect for original content dimensions. The update reflects both the influence of user advocacy and X’s efforts to retain content creators amid shifting user expectations.
The timing of these video feature changes coincides with wider realignment in the social media market: last month, TikTok’s U.S. assets were sold to an American investor group, and X is positioning itself to attract video-focused users and creators seeking alternative platforms.
In parallel, X is expanding its suite of AI-powered content tools. The company is integrating features from Grok, a generative AI model with text-to-video generation capabilities, aimed at improving the ease and appeal of video creation. Generative video refers to AI systems that create video from text prompts, often using advanced neural network architectures.
However, Grok’s image-generation feature recently spurred controversy for enabling production of sexualized imagery, including depictions of women and children. In response, X has limited the feature’s availability to paying subscribers, underscoring the ongoing challenges of AI content moderation. The company continues to adjust its policies and restrict access as it seeks to balance innovative content tools with user safety and regulatory compliance.
Further video-focused updates and AI enhancements are expected as X increases its investment in video as a core driver of user engagement and platform growth. The development highlights the complex trade-offs facing social networks as they deploy AI technologies for both content creation and moderation.
