Amazon has unveiled three new personality styles for its Alexa+ artificial intelligence assistant, expanding how users can customise their interactions with the voice-enabled system.

The new modes—Brief, Chill, and Sweet—are now available to all Alexa+ customers. Users can access them through the Alexa app or by simply saying, “Alexa, change your personality style.” The update also lets users revert to the classic Alexa voice at any time.

The Brief style delivers concise responses, omitting extra conversational elements or small talk to provide information directly. In contrast, the Chill style adopts an easy-going, relaxed manner, echoing laid-back attitudes often associated with surfer or stoner archetypes. The Sweet style is notably upbeat and cheerful, offering positive, energetic replies.

Amazon released audio samples to illustrate the distinction between these styles. In response to “Alexa, how’s it going?”, the Chill style answered, “Life’s treating me well – all systems are Zen and the digital universe is spinning in harmony.” The Sweet style responded with, “Absolutely fantastic! I’m radiating pure joy and ready to make your day incredibly amazing!”

These new personalities were developed according to five key metrics: expressiveness, emotional openness, formality, directness, and humour. Amazon employs these traits as adjustable parameters to define and systematise the assistant’s behaviour. The company indicated that more personality options may be added in the future, potentially involving additional combinations of these characteristics.

The move reflects an industry trend toward more adaptive and personalised AI-powered voice assistants. By providing a range of communication styles, Amazon aims to serve varied user preferences and situational needs, enhancing the flexibility and appeal of Alexa+ for both casual and utilitarian interactions.

For users, the addition of multiple personality modes can address preferences ranging from efficient, task-focused exchanges to more sociable or light-hearted interactions. Such options demonstrate the growing importance of human-computer interaction research in shaping how AI systems align with individual expectations in daily life.
