Qualcomm has announced the FastConnect 8800, its first Wi-Fi 8 chip, during the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona. Positioned as a significant leap in wireless connectivity, the new chip is designed for mobile devices and aims to support rapidly growing demands from device connectivity and the anticipated surge in AI-driven data traffic.

The FastConnect 8800 integrates the latest Wi-Fi 8 standard along with Bluetooth 7.0, Ultra-Wideband technology, and Thread 1.5. Its 4×4 Wi-Fi radio configuration enables peak download speeds of up to 11.6 Gbps—double the throughput of Qualcomm's previous Wi-Fi 7 platform and three times its gigabit range. Bluetooth connectivity has also been enhanced, offering data speeds up to 7.5 Mbps in high-throughput mode.

Commercial availability of devices using the FastConnect 8800 chip is expected in the second half of 2026. Qualcomm's announcement comes amid increasing emphasis on infrastructure capable of supporting advanced AI applications and high-volume, low-latency traffic.

Alongside the chip launch, Qualcomm outlined its strategy for the next decade of wireless networks, targeting a commercial rollout of 6G connectivity by 2029. Company CEO Cristiano Amon described 6G as "the bedrock for an AI future," and predicted that by 2034, AI applications will generate up to 30% of all global cellular traffic.

Qualcomm’s vision for 6G encompasses not only enhanced connectivity but also wide-area sensing capabilities and advanced computing integrations to serve evolving AI demands. Standards and technical specifications for 6G are expected to be finalised by 2028, with pre-commercial demonstrations scheduled for that year and commercial systems slated for 2029.

To drive this effort, Qualcomm has formed a coalition with over 50 technology companies, including Amazon, Cisco, Google, Meta, Microsoft, Nokia, and Samsung. The coalition has committed to a milestone-oriented roadmap, focusing on coordinated development of standards, early system validation, and a globally synchronised rollout of 6G infrastructure.

Cristiano Amon emphasised that industry partnerships and joint innovation will be critical to delivering these next-generation networks. The roadmap set by the coalition aligns with Qualcomm's target for bringing initial 6G solutions to market by 2029.

The Mobile World Congress, where the announcement was made, remains a key industry event for unveiling wireless and connectivity advancements. Qualcomm, as a leading supplier of semiconductor and wireless communication technologies, continues to play a central role in the development of future mobile communications infrastructure.
