OpenAI Develops Code-Hosting Platform to Compete With GitHub
OpenAI is building a code-hosting platform to rival Microsoft's GitHub, addressing recent disruptions and signaling heightened competition in the AI sector. The initiative is in its early stages and may be offered to OpenAI's customers, although a launch date is not yet clear.
OpenAI is developing a new code-hosting platform, aiming to provide an alternative to Microsoft's GitHub. The move represents a direct challenge to a major partner, as Microsoft holds a substantial stake in OpenAI, and underscores the increasing competition within the artificial intelligence sector.
According to a report by The Information, the initiative was prompted by recent periods of service disruption that left GitHub temporarily unavailable for engineers at OpenAI. These access issues reportedly accelerated internal discussions to create a more resilient and possibly proprietary tool for code collaboration and storage.
The project is currently in its early stages, with its development still underway and a public release expected to be months away. While specifics remain limited, some OpenAI employees have reportedly considered marketing the forthcoming repository solution to OpenAI’s considerable customer base. This would represent both a technical and a commercial expansion for the company, whose products—including AI models such as GPT—are widely used by software developers.
Microsoft’s position as both a core investor and the owner of GitHub introduces a complex dynamic. The new platform would compete directly with GitHub, which is currently one of the world’s leading repositories for code, relied upon by millions for software development and open-source collaboration. Neither OpenAI, Microsoft, nor GitHub responded to media requests for comment regarding the development of the new platform.
Industry observers note that competition in the AI infrastructure space is intensifying, especially as large technology firms continue to seek more integrated stacks combining development tools, AI services, and cloud infrastructure. For the time being, sources familiar with the matter said the project remains unverified by independent sources outside the company.
OpenAI’s most recent funding round valued the company at $840 billion, with a $110 billion raise involving major technology firms and the Japanese investment group SoftBank. The new code-hosting initiative could become a strategic asset for OpenAI’s future positioning in enterprise and developer markets.
