AI-Generated War Images and Videos Flood Social Media During Conflict

The latest U.S.-Israel conflict with Iran has sparked a surge in fake AI-generated videos, satellite imagery, and manipulated visuals that have spread widely online. Social media platforms are struggling to counter this deluge of disinformation, raising concerns about public trust and authenticity during wartime events.

A surge of artificial intelligence-generated videos and fabricated satellite imagery has flooded global social media platforms in the wake of the recent U.S.-Israel campaign against Iran, accumulating hundreds of millions of views and intensifying concerns about information manipulation during armed conflict.

Analysts report that since February 28, manipulated visuals produced by both state media and independent creators have become a defining feature of the information environment during the current regional crisis. According to BBC Verify, the sheer volume of viral AI-generated content may have set a new record for a conflict-related event.

Among the most widely circulated examples is an AI-generated video portraying missile strikes on Tel Aviv, which appeared in over 300 separate posts and attracted tens of millions of views. Another deepfake video, showing the Burj Khalifa in Dubai engulfed in flames, gained traction as fears of expanded attacks spread among local residents.

State-affiliated media are also participating in dissemination. For instance, Iran’s Tehran Times published an altered satellite image purporting to show damage to a U.S. radar facility in Qatar. Google’s SynthID verification tool revealed that the image had been digitally manipulated from authentic footage of a U.S. naval outpost in Bahrain, using a generative AI tool produced by Google.

Manipulated battlefield visuals are not limited to synthetic footage. Realistic game content from the combat simulator War Thunder was incorrectly circulated as genuine combat reporting. In one prominent incident, Texas Governor Greg Abbott issued a social media post featuring such footage accompanied by the caption “Bye bye.” The post was later deleted following community moderation that highlighted its inauthentic origins.

The prevalence of misleading content has also challenged the capabilities of automated moderation tools. X’s AI assistant, Grok, repeatedly failed to distinguish between genuine and fabricated videos, misidentifying an AI-generated missile strike as authentic and incorrectly referencing reports from other news outlets to substantiate its confirmation.

Social media companies are responding to criticism with new mitigation policies. On 4 March, Nikita Bier, head of product at X, announced that creators distributing unlabeled AI-generated war footage would be suspended from the Creator Revenue Sharing Program for 90 days, with permanent bans for repeat violations. These rules are supported by the deployment of Community Notes and enhanced AI-generated content metadata to improve detection and flagging of manipulated material.

Despite these efforts, critics argue that platform business models based on engagement continue to incentivize creators to publish sensational or deceptive content. Mahsa Alimardani, an expert on digital rights, warned that the proliferation of faked videos poses a broader public risk by undermining trust in verified reporting and complicating the verification of genuine evidence from conflict zones.

The consequences of this widespread AI-driven disinformation are being felt across the globe, as users struggle to identify trustworthy sources amid a rapidly shifting media landscape.
