Mastercard Demonstrates First Live AI-Powered Payment in Singapore
Mastercard, in partnership with Singaporean banks DBS and UOB, has completed its first live agent-based payment transaction. The move marks a significant step toward mainstream adoption of AI-powered autonomous commerce in the Asia-Pacific region. The development follows similar pilots in other parts of APAC and underscores rapid innovation in financial technology.
Mastercard has advanced the adoption of autonomous financial technology by completing its first live, authenticated agent-based payment transaction in Singapore. Announced on March 4, 2026, the milestone was achieved in collaboration with major regional banks DBS and UOB. This demonstration marks a transition from proof-of-concept to real-world use for agentic payments—financial transactions initiated and executed by artificial intelligence (AI) agents without direct human intervention at the point of purchase.
The transaction utilized Mastercard Agent Pay, a framework designed for secure AI-driven purchases. In the demonstration, an AI agent arranged a ride to Singapore's Changi Airport through the global mobility provider hoppa. The booking was facilitated by CardInfoLink’s AI agent, which connects to hoppa’s network of taxi and airport limousine services.
Each transaction in this framework uses a unique Mastercard Agentic Token issued per agent. To ensure security and privacy, consumer consent is explicitly captured and purchase confirmation is secured through Mastercard Payment Passkeys, a digital authentication method. Tokenised credentials, authenticated via passkeys, protect user data throughout the process.
This agentic payments chain highlights a new financial workflow: an AI agent perceives a need, identifies a relevant service, initiates a payment, and completes the transaction—eliminating the traditional requirement for a human to manually confirm the purchase.
Minsook Cho, Mastercard’s country manager for Singapore, emphasized that the successful live demonstration shows how innovation can be implemented into everyday services safely and responsibly with the Agent Pay system.
Singapore is at the forefront of this technological evolution. Mastercard has previously conducted similar agentic transactions in Australia, New Zealand, and India. However, its ongoing commitments in Singapore—including the establishment of a regional AI Centre of Excellence and deployment of specialized agentic commerce teams—signal the city-state’s central role in advancing this technology. These teams will support banks and merchants in the transition toward agent-led financial services.
DBS, one of Singapore’s largest banks, is also piloting agentic payment solutions with other major international players. In February 2026, DBS completed a separate pilot with Visa, showcasing AI agents executing food and beverage transactions using DBS and POSB cards. The participation of DBS in both Mastercard and Visa’s initiatives within weeks underscores the intensity of financial innovation in the region.
Looking ahead, Mastercard plans to expand Agent Pay’s use cases across transportation, travel, and retail sectors where reducing manual payment friction is a priority. The rapid pace of development suggests that the underlying infrastructure to allow AI agents to spend on behalf of consumers is being actively built and deployed.
