Yann LeCun’s AI Startup AMI Labs Raises Over $1 Billion

Advanced Machine Intelligence (AMI) Labs, a Paris-based artificial intelligence startup co-founded by prominent researcher Yann LeCun, announced it has raised $1.03 billion in its initial funding round. This seed round—the largest of its kind recorded for a European company—underscores the rapid acceleration of investment in next-generation AI technologies.

LeCun, a former Meta chief AI scientist and recipient of the Turing Award, revealed the news in a statement, noting the exceptional scale of AMI Labs’ first fundraising effort. The company, only six months old, specializes in developing “world models,” a branch of AI technology designed to interpret and predict real-world dynamics, in contrast to the dominant large language model (LLM) approach pursued by many Silicon Valley companies.

World models are artificial intelligence systems created to simulate and forecast aspects of the physical world, rather than generating language based solely on large text datasets. Unlike LLMs—which analyze vast quantities of written material to generate responses—world models focus on learning the underlying structure and behavior of real environments and phenomena.

The significant capital injection into AMI Labs signals growing investor appetite for AI solutions that diverge from traditional generative models such as those made by OpenAI, Anthropic, and Google. It also positions AMI Labs at the heart of a competitive race for technological leadership and innovation beyond the current boundaries of language-based AI.

The funding round was co-led by prominent venture capital firms including Cathay Innovation, Greycroft, Hiro Capital, and HV Capital. Bezos Expeditions, the personal investment company of Jeff Bezos, also participated, as did former Google CEO Eric Schmidt and World Wide Web inventor Tim Berners-Lee. Corporate investors such as Nvidia and Samsung contributed to the round as well.

Alexandre LeBrun, previously the CEO of French health tech startup Nabla, serves as AMI Labs’ chief executive. Yann LeCun remains deeply involved as the company’s executive chair after departing Meta in the previous year.

AMI Labs has announced plans to expand its teams in Paris, New York, Montreal, and Singapore. While its current technology focus is on world models, the scale of the funding and caliber of its backers highlight both the growing global stakes in AI research and Europe’s increasingly prominent role in the sector.
