Amazon Broadens Access to Health AI Tool for Prime Members
Amazon is expanding its Health AI assistant to a wider user base through its website and app, offering free medical chats and services to Prime members. The update allows more users to access features such as prescription management, appointment booking, and medical record interpretation. The move follows broader adoption of healthcare-focused AI tools by major tech companies.
Amazon has expanded access to its Health AI assistant, allowing both Prime members and other users in the United States to utilize the tool on Amazon's website and app. The assistant, which leverages artificial intelligence to provide medical information and healthcare support, was previously available only via the One Medical app following Amazon’s $3.9 billion acquisition of One Medical in 2023.
The updated service enables users to interact with the AI-powered assistant for a range of health-related needs. These include interpreting medical records, managing prescriptions, booking healthcare appointments, and answering medical questions. Prime members receive up to five free direct-message care consultations covering more than 30 common conditions with One Medical providers. For users who are not Prime subscribers, a pay-per-visit option remains available.
Amazon’s Health AI is designed to provide tailored healthcare guidance and connect users to professionals or treatments as necessary. The assistant operates within an encrypted environment that complies with the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA), offering privacy protections such as data encryption and access controls. With user permission, it can access patient health information via the nationwide Health Information Exchange system for more precise and personalized responses; however, Amazon processes training data in an abstracted way that aims to protect user identities.
To begin using the service, customers must create or sign in to their Amazon Health profile on the website or app. Upon registering, users can submit medical questions or requests, with notification of access provided via email.
Despite its emphasis on privacy, Amazon has not specified the exact encryption methods or access control mechanisms it employs to secure user interactions. The company has also not responded to external requests for more detailed information regarding data handling.
Industry observers note the growing trend of large technology firms developing healthcare-focused AI solutions. Earlier in 2024, OpenAI introduced ChatGPT Health, and Anthropic unveiled its Claude for Healthcare platform. Amazon's initiative reflects a broader movement toward generative AI applications in the healthcare sector, with companies seeking to enhance user engagement, health literacy, and service accessibility through AI-driven platforms.
However, concerns persist regarding privacy, data handling, and the use of patient conversations for AI training. While Amazon asserts that its AI tool is designed with privacy at its core, researchers warn that the sharing of health information with artificial intelligence systems still carries risks.
The Health AI assistant is now accessible via Amazon.com and the Amazon app, representing a significant addition to the company’s portfolio of health-related services.
