Spotlight Pathology Secures £1.4M to Advance AI for Blood Cancer Diagnosis
UK-based Spotlight Pathology has raised £1.4 million in seed funding to develop AI-based software aimed at improving the speed and consistency of blood cancer diagnoses. The funding will facilitate regulatory approval and clinical trials as the company works to integrate its digital pathology tool into existing healthcare workflows.
Spotlight Pathology, a health technology startup based in the United Kingdom, has raised £1.4 million in seed investment to accelerate the development of its artificial intelligence (AI) software for diagnosing blood cancers.
Blood cancers are among the most difficult oncological conditions to detect accurately and promptly, often requiring assessment by specialist pathologists. Delays in diagnosis can seriously impact patients’ chances of timely treatment, a concern that is particularly pressing as UK pathology departments face increasing demands and a shortage of skilled staff.
Spotlight Pathology's AI-driven platform is designed to analyze digital pathology images, providing clinicians with decision support that aims to improve both the speed and consistency of blood cancer diagnoses. The software integrates directly into existing clinical workflows, helping pathologists to prioritize urgent cases and enabling faster clinical decision-making.
The company was co-founded by Dr. Richard Byers, a Consultant Haematopathologist, and Dr. Martin Fergie, an AI developer with extensive experience in healthcare algorithms. Their combined expertise targets the technical and clinical challenges of automating aspects of blood cancer diagnosis while supporting, rather than replacing, the work of medical professionals.
The newly secured funding will support the company's ongoing efforts to obtain additional regulatory approvals and to progress through its first clinical in-use trials. According to Sam Perona, Chief Executive Officer at Spotlight Pathology, the mission is to provide pathologists with tools that fit smoothly into their existing practices, allowing for earlier and more accurate diagnoses.
“This investment gives us the momentum to move from development into real-world clinical settings. We’re excited to be scaling the business from Daresbury, working alongside partners across the North West and beyond, and to be strengthening our board with experienced leadership as we enter this next phase,” Perona said in a statement.
The investment round was led by the UK Innovation and Science Seed Fund, managed by Future Planet Capital. Sakura Holloway, Investment Director, commented that Spotlight Pathology demonstrates the successful translation of UK university research into technologies with tangible clinical impact, and noted the pressing need for improved tools in blood cancer diagnosis.
“This investment reflects our conviction in both the team and the technology, and our commitment to backing spin-outs that apply advanced science to pressing healthcare challenges, improving productivity in the health system and delivering meaningful global patient impact,” Holloway added.
Spotlight Pathology’s software underscores the wider trend of AI being harnessed in healthcare to address both clinical and systemic challenges. By aiming to reduce diagnostic delays in blood cancer, the company hopes to deliver benefits to individual patients while alleviating pressure on overstretched medical services.
