OpenAI Launches GPT-5.4 Mini and Nano Language Models

OpenAI has released two new versions of its GPT-5.4 large language model, targeting broader accessibility and efficiency. The new GPT-5.4 mini model is offered to both free and Go users, while the GPT-5.4 nano model is designed for developers using OpenAI’s API. These models aim to deliver faster, more cost-effective AI solutions for a range of applications.

OpenAI has expanded its offering in the large language model (LLM) market with the release of GPT-5.4 mini and GPT-5.4 nano models, further developing its GPT-5.4 system announced in March 2023.

The GPT-5.4 mini model is now accessible to both Free and Go users of ChatGPT, OpenAI’s popular conversational AI platform. Previously, advanced AI features were primarily available to paid subscribers. According to OpenAI, GPT-5.4 mini brings performance that closely approximates the original GPT-5.4 in core areas, including advanced reasoning and understanding of multimodal inputs—meaning it can process not just text but also images and audio.

Free and Go users can select the 'Thinking' mode from the ChatGPT plus menu to access the mini model. Additionally, for paid ChatGPT users, GPT-5.4 mini will serve as an automatic fallback if usage rates for the full GPT-5.4 model are exceeded. This approach is intended to maintain service continuity while providing users access to the latest AI capabilities.

OpenAI reports several improvements in GPT-5.4 mini over its predecessor, GPT-5.0 mini. Notably, the new model enhances the interpretation of non-text data such as images and audio, boasts faster response times—more than twice as fast as GPT-5.0 mini—and features upgraded web search integration.

In parallel, OpenAI introduced GPT-5.4 nano, aimed at specialized tasks where speed and cost are critical. This smaller model is available exclusively through OpenAI’s API, and is not integrated into the ChatGPT interface. Developers can use GPT-5.4 nano for jobs such as data classification and extraction, delegating routine tasks to AI agents. OpenAI has set pricing for this option at $0.20 per million input tokens, highlighting its efficiency for high-volume automated work.

The dual release underscores OpenAI’s ongoing strategy to diversify its LLM portfolio, catering to both everyday users and technical professionals requiring AI-driven automation. By offering multiple levels of model complexity and speed, OpenAI aims to attract a wider user base and provide more tailored solutions for different use cases.

Despite the global significance of such releases, the update’s direct impact on European users or regulatory frameworks was not addressed in the company’s announcement.
