A humanoid robot designed to entertain diners at a Haidilao hot pot restaurant in Cupertino, California, malfunctioned on Thursday, prompting staff to intervene and restrain the machine after it began moving erratically.

Eyewitnesses described the robot, known for its dancing routines, abruptly departing from its programmed path and moving unpredictably across the floor while music played. The incident occurred during dinner service, leading staff to quickly act by turning off the robot and removing it from the dining area.

No injuries were reported. The restaurant resumed service after briefly pausing to address the malfunction. Videos captured by diners later circulated on social media, showing employees physically restraining the robot as it continued to move its limbs.

The robot was reportedly an "Agibot" model, equipped with artificial intelligence (AI) software for movement, balance, and entertainment routines. The malfunction appears to have been caused by a technical fault, according to preliminary observations from restaurant staff, though a detailed investigation is ongoing.

Humanoid robots are increasingly adopted in restaurants and public settings to automate tasks, engage customers, and reduce staffing pressures. However, the incident highlights ongoing concerns about the reliability and safety of such systems, especially in busy, uncontrolled public environments.

AI-driven robotics rely on advanced sensors and software to navigate spaces and interact safely with humans. Malfunctions, though rare, call attention to the importance of stringent testing and oversight. While many industry experts highlight the benefits of automation, events like this reinforce the importance of robust safety mechanisms and emergency protocols.

No comment was available from the developer of the Agibot robot as of publication time, and Haidilao representatives indicated an internal review is underway.
