Google has unveiled Lyria 3 Pro, an updated artificial intelligence model designed for music generation, allowing users to produce audio tracks up to three minutes in length. This marks a significant increase from its predecessor, Lyria 3, which was limited to 30-second compositions.

Lyria 3 Pro, available to paid subscribers through the Gemini app, reflects Google's continued investment in generative AI—technology that creates new content, such as music or images, from data. The enhanced model gives users increased creative control, allowing them to specify musical elements within prompts, such as intros, verses, choruses, and bridges.

In addition to the Gemini app, Lyria 3 Pro will be gradually integrated into Google Vids, the company's video editing application, and ProducerAI, a recently acquired generative AI-powered music production tool. Google is also extending Lyria 3 Pro's capabilities to its enterprise division, including platforms such as Vertex AI, Gemini API, and AI Studio. These integrations are expected to support a range of creative and business-focused music applications.

Google stated that Lyria 3 Pro was trained using data from its industry partners and permissible sources from YouTube and Google. The company emphasized that while the AI can take "broad inspiration" from specific artists when prompted, it does not mimic or replicate individual artists' styles directly—a response to ongoing concerns around copyright and artist rights.

To increase transparency, all tracks generated with Lyria 3 and Lyria 3 Pro are marked with SynthID, a digital watermark indicating the material is AI-generated. This move comes as the music industry faces growing scrutiny over AI's potential to misattribute or replicate artists’ work. Spotify recently introduced tools for artists to review songs associated with their names to avoid misattribution, and Deezer has deployed cross-platform solutions for identifying AI-generated music.

The release of Lyria 3 Pro underscores the rapid evolution of generative AI in creative industries and renews policy discussions about the identification and regulation of AI-generated content in the music sector.
