Perplexity Launches Personal Computer AI Assistant for Mac

Perplexity has officially begun the rollout of its Personal Computer, an artificial intelligence assistant designed to manage files, applications, and web browsing locally on Mac devices. Initially announced in March at the company’s Ask developer conference in San Francisco, the Personal Computer AI is now available to all Perplexity Max subscribers and waitlisted users.

Unlike conventional operating systems that respond to user commands, Perplexity’s new assistant is built around user goals, according to CEO Aravind Srinivas. This positions the tool as an "AI operating system" that continuously manages and executes tasks across the local device, shifting the paradigm of computer interaction from command-based input to goal-oriented automation.

Following its announcement, Perplexity began with a waitlist, and now—five weeks later—the Personal Computer feature has started shipping to eligible customers. The assistant integrates with the Perplexity Mac App, providing secure management of files, applications, and web browsing. According to company statements, the AI works within local Mac environments, including direct interactions with iMessage, Apple Mail, and Calendar, to search, read, or write files.

Personal Computer is designed for dedicated Mac devices—especially Mac mini—where it operates continuously. Users can also remotely initiate tasks from an iPhone, secured through two-factor authentication. Perplexity highlights that the assistant securely connects to any selected folder, ensuring local file operations remain under user control.

The system uses approximately 20 advanced AI models to direct tasks to the most suitable model, enhancing efficiency and performance. Built-in safeguards include a kill switch for immediate shutdown, mandatory user confirmations for critical operations, and an audit trail for activity tracking, addressing user concerns about privacy and oversight.

Access to Personal Computer is limited to the Perplexity Max subscription tier, which costs $200 per month. By contrast, the more affordable Perplexity Pro plan at $20 per month only offers access to Perplexity Computer, the company’s cloud-based AI service introduced in February.

As Perplexity’s Personal Computer enters the market, it faces competition from established names such as OpenClaw, signaling increasing competition in local AI assistant technology.

Future releases are expected to include enterprise versions of Personal Computer for business environments, indicating a broader strategy for AI-powered workplace productivity.
