Google Expands Gemini to Support Multi-Format File Generation
Google has released a major update to Gemini, its AI-powered chatbot, allowing users to generate and export files in a wide range of formats directly from the prompt bar. The new feature, now rolling out globally, aims to streamline document creation and integration across productivity platforms.
Google has introduced a significant update to its Gemini chatbot, enabling users to generate files in various formats directly within the application. This enhancement allows users to create documents by entering instructions—such as 'create a budget'—and then export the output with a single click.
Previously, Gemini users needed to copy and paste content into separate applications for formatting and exporting. With this update, Gemini now supports exporting files as PDF, TXT, RTF, CSV, Google Docs, Google Slides, Google Sheets, as well as Microsoft Word and Excel documents, Markdown, and LaTeX.
LaTeX support is notable for its relevance in academic and scientific communities. LaTeX is a typesetting system widely used to prepare technical and scientific documents. The ability to generate diagrams and full LaTeX files directly from Gemini is likely to benefit STEM students and researchers, especially as the AI field turns more attention to scientific applications. This update follows OpenAI’s release of Prism, an app for LaTeX journal formatting, highlighting growing competition among AI providers to address specialized user needs.
The new feature is rolling out globally, covering individual Workspace users and all Gemini users. According to Google, these updates are intended to simplify workflows by removing the need to switch repeatedly between different productivity tools and reducing manual formatting steps.
The expansion comes amid intensifying competition in the AI productivity tools market. Anthropic’s Claude chatbot has offered comparable file editing and generation functionalities since September, underscoring a trend among AI developers to enhance productivity features and support a broader range of output formats.
For users, the development promises improved efficiency and more seamless integration between AI-generated content and conventional productivity applications.
