DeepSeek Negotiates Landmark $7.3 Billion Funding Round in China
DeepSeek, a leading Chinese artificial intelligence startup, is reportedly in advanced talks to secure up to $7.35 billion in funding. This round, the largest of its kind in China’s AI sector to date, could value the company at $50 billion, positioning it among the top AI firms globally.
DeepSeek, a prominent Chinese artificial intelligence (AI) startup, is in the final stages of raising up to 50 billion yuan (approximately $7.35 billion) in funding, according to multiple media reports. If completed, the deal would represent the largest single funding round for a Chinese AI company, potentially valuing DeepSeek at $50 billion — a sharp increase from an estimated $10 billion just weeks ago.
The funding round is expected to be led by China’s National Artificial Intelligence Industry Investment Fund, an $8.8 billion state-backed vehicle established in early 2025. This fund, along with the China Integrated Circuit Industry Investment Fund (known as "Big Fund III"), is prioritizing investment in domestic technology companies to reduce reliance on U.S. semiconductor and AI technology.
Major Chinese technology firms Tencent and Alibaba are reportedly in discussions to join the round. Tencent has proposed acquiring up to a 20% stake in DeepSeek. However, founder Liang Wenfeng, who currently retains nearly 90% ownership of the company, has expressed hesitancy about ceding significant control. Liang, a hedge fund billionaire, plans to personally invest up to 20 billion yuan (about $2.94 billion) during this round.
DeepSeek first gained attention for developing advanced AI models using chips produced by Huawei Technologies, a move designed to circumvent dependence on U.S.-origin semiconductor hardware. The company, based in Hangzhou, previously declined all external investment, operating until now as a self-funded enterprise.
Industry sources report that DeepSeek’s valuation rose rapidly from $10 billion, then $30 billion, to as much as $50 billion, driven by heightened interest from Chinese state investors. This surge reflects Beijing’s broader strategy of supporting domestic AI champions as the country seeks global competitiveness and technological independence.
Funds from this capital raise will primarily support the expansion of DeepSeek’s computing infrastructure and increase employee compensation. The move aims to attract and retain top AI talent amid high turnover and active recruitment efforts by competitors in China’s rapidly evolving AI sector. Equity stakes for employees are also a significant component of the company’s retention strategy.
DeepSeek is accelerating its commercialization plans, with the release of an upgraded AI model (V4.1) expected in June. The company’s foundation models—large-scale AI neural networks trained on vast text and data corpora—are intended for use in generative AI applications like language processing and content generation.
Should DeepSeek’s fundraising reach its projected target, it would propel the company to the upper ranks of global AI startups, surpassing other significant recent fundraises in China and signaling the country’s accelerated drive toward AI leadership.
