Mistral Acquires Austria’s Emmi AI to Boost Industrial Offerings
France’s Mistral has acquired Austria-based Emmi AI, a startup specializing in physics-based AI models for industrial applications. The deal strengthens Mistral’s position in industrial AI across sectors such as aerospace, automotive, and manufacturing.
France’s Mistral, a leading European artificial intelligence model developer, has acquired Austrian startup Emmi AI in a move to expand its capabilities in serving industrial sectors across Europe. The acquisition, for an undisclosed amount, marks Mistral’s second purchase this year and highlights its growing role as a regional competitor to major US AI firms.
Founded in 2024, Emmi AI made headlines last year by securing the largest-ever seed funding round for an Austrian startup—raising €15 million led by investors including 3VC, Speedinvest, Serena, and PUSH VC. The company focuses on building advanced AI models to accelerate engineering workflows and product design for industrial clients. Emmi AI is part of a wave of specialized “applied AI” startups targeting challenges such as computational fluid dynamics, thermal analysis, and material stress testing—critical functions for industries ranging from aerospace to semiconductors.
Mistral’s acquisition signals a strategic investment in deep technical capabilities. Emmi AI’s team of over 30 researchers and engineers will join Mistral’s Science and Applied AI departments, integrating expertise in physics-driven machine learning. This move particularly enhances Mistral’s footprint in Austria, Germany, and Lithuania, where Emmi’s staff are based, and the company plans to hire additional local talent in these regions.
In a statement, Arthur Mensch, co-founder and CEO of Mistral, described the deal as a move that "cements Mistral’s leadership in industrial AI" and supports a vision to become "the partner of choice for manufacturers in high-stakes sectors like aerospace, automotive, or semiconductors." Mensch emphasized that the integrated team will provide customers with a platform to solve complex engineering problems and accelerate research and development processes.
Emmi AI’s co-founder and Chief Science Officer Johannes Brandstetter added that the company has been committed to solving physical challenges such as real-time power grid stabilization, AI-based simulation of injection molding, and automotive safety testing. "By integrating our expertise into Mistral’s world-class AI ecosystem, we are positioned to revolutionise core R&D," Brandstetter said.
Mistral’s acquisition of Emmi AI builds on its earlier purchase of French AI startup Koyeb and represents a broader push to deepen AI expertise for industrial applications within Europe. The transaction also reflects the region’s increasing ambitions to cultivate homegrown AI talent and startups capable of competing on the global stage.
