Nvidia’s CEO Jensen Huang announced the launch of the Vera CPU during the company’s latest earnings call, positioning it as a transformative product for artificial intelligence hardware. Following record quarterly revenues of $81.6 billion, Huang forecasted sales reaching $91 billion in the next quarter, attributing the company’s robust outlook to Vera’s entry into the market.

Described by Huang as the “world’s first CPU, purpose-built for agentic AI,” Vera signals Nvidia’s expansion beyond its established domain in graphic processing units (GPUs) into central processing units (CPUs), a sector historically led by companies like Intel and AMD. Agentic AI refers to systems capable of autonomous decision-making and task management, requiring advanced computational resources. Huang emphasized widespread industry adoption, stating that major hyperscalers and system builders are collaborating with Nvidia to deploy the new CPU. He argued that the industry is moving toward "rebuilding computing for agentic AI and robotic physical AI."

Huang clarified the division of labor between Nvidia’s product lines, noting that while GPUs will continue to handle the bulk of "thinking"—the complex calculations powering modern AI models—Vera CPUs are engineered for "doing," efficiently executing assigned tasks for AI agents. Unlike traditional CPUs optimized for multi-core processing, Vera prioritizes rapid processing of AI model tokens, potentially setting a new technical standard for AI-focused hardware.

Nvidia has already sold $20 billion worth of standalone Vera CPUs in 2026, according to Huang. He expressed confidence that demand will continue to rise as the proliferation of AI agents—software systems designed to act on behalf of users—increases globally. "The world has a billion users, human users. My sense is that the world is going to have billions of agents," Huang stated, projecting a massive shift in computing infrastructure requirements.

Despite these developments, Nvidia faces skepticism from some quarters on Wall Street concerning the company’s ability to sustain growth in the CPU market. Competition is intensifying, highlighted by Amazon Web Services (AWS) securing a sizable contract with Meta for AI CPUs. Amazon CEO Andy Jassy has publicly underscored AWS’s strong position in AI chip development, signaling a rapidly evolving and contested market landscape.

The Vera initiative marks a strategic expansion for Nvidia as it seeks to address surging global demand for AI infrastructure, now estimated to unlock a total addressable market of $200 billion. The company’s growing involvement in both GPU and CPU sectors underscores its ambition to shape the future of AI hardware.
