Berget AI Raises €2.1M to Advance Sovereign AI in Sweden
Swedish startup Berget AI has secured €2.1 million in funding to develop AI services that maintain data within national borders. The company targets organizations seeking control over sensitive information, particularly in light of Europe’s rising regulatory demands. Backed by Luminar Ventures, Wellstreet, and Norrsken Evolve, Berget AI aims to expand its platform in response to strong demand for sovereign AI solutions.
Swedish artificial intelligence company Berget AI has raised €2.1 million (SEK 24 million) in a seed funding round led by Luminar Ventures, with additional participation from Wellstreet and Norrsken Evolve. The funding comes amid heightened demand for sovereign AI solutions in Europe, as organizations seek greater control over sensitive data in response to expanding regulatory requirements and the implications of the EU’s recently enacted AI Act.
Berget AI was founded by Christian Landgren, a digital entrepreneur and activist, and Andreas Lundmark, who brings AI expertise from Boston Consulting Group. The company is developing a platform that allows organizations to build AI applications using open language models hosted entirely on Swedish infrastructure. By keeping data and computing within Sweden, Berget AI ensures that sensitive information remains under European jurisdiction and is not transferred to global cloud providers.
The company offers a turnkey, full-stack AI solution designed for developers who require ease of use but do not wish to manage complex infrastructure. This approach is positioned as a modern alternative to U.S.-based cloud hyperscalers and traditional on-premise systems. Berget AI’s platform emphasizes data sovereignty, open-source AI technology, and sustainable operations—features that are increasingly relevant for public sector bodies and regulated industries facing new transparency, traceability, and data governance mandates in the EU.
“Our service provides an accessible choice that gives complete control without the need for organizations to build and manage their own infrastructure,” said Andreas Lundmark, co-founder of Berget AI. Since the service’s launch shortly before summer 2025, it has garnered considerable attention from customers prioritizing sovereignty and data protection. “We are seeing a real and growing need, and with this funding, we plan to accelerate development and expand our offerings to meet the strong demand,” Lundmark added.
Christian Landgren, Berget AI’s other co-founder, noted, “Sovereignty is shifting from policy debate to practical necessity for development teams. Our platform is engineered for local operations, open models, and technical autonomy from the outset.”
The company reports that the newly raised capital will primarily fund product development and expanded sales operations. Berget AI’s expansion is supported by investors who see a clear structural gap in Europe’s AI ecosystem: "Berget AI addresses a structural problem in Europe’s AI ecosystem: the lack of sovereign and scalable infrastructure. The team combines strong technical expertise with perfect timing," said Jacob Key, General Partner at Luminar Ventures. Rebecca Löthman Rydå of Norrsken Evolve added, “Open and sustainable AI infrastructure is crucial for Europe’s long-term resilience.”
Growing interest in sovereign AI is driven by both regulatory and geopolitical factors. The EU AI Act and related legislation are prompting organizations—particularly in the public sector and regulated industries—to seek AI solutions that guarantee local control, compliance, and security. Berget AI positions itself at the intersection of these requirements, aiming to offer European organizations a viable path toward compliant, scalable, and transparent AI deployment.
