Spotify Expands AI-Powered Prompted Playlists to New Markets
Spotify has extended its AI-powered Prompted Playlist feature to Premium users in the UK, Ireland, Australia, and Sweden. The tool generates custom playlists based on users’ text prompts, reflecting ongoing AI integration into Spotify’s platform. Recent updates highlight Spotify’s strategic use of AI to enhance user experience and introduce new content features.
Spotify has announced the expansion of its AI-powered 'Prompted Playlist' feature, making it available to Premium subscribers in the United Kingdom, Ireland, Australia, and Sweden. This move follows initial tests in New Zealand and a subsequent launch in the United States and Canada, marking another step in the company’s ongoing strategy to incorporate artificial intelligence into its platform.
The Prompted Playlist feature enables users to create personalised music playlists by entering English-language prompts that specify music genres, moods, themes, or inspirations—such as referencing a film or television show. After users tap 'Create' and select 'Prompted Playlist,' Spotify’s AI interprets the request, accessing the user’s listening history and drawing from current musical and cultural trends. Each playlist generated includes short explanations for each track, offering transparency on why a particular song was chosen.
Users can further tailor their playlists by indicating a preference for new tracks or limiting choices to their existing library. The feature remains in beta, with reported usage limits at around 20 to 30 prompts per user. Users can edit prompts or start over to refine the output, and automatic playlist refreshing is available on daily or weekly schedules to adapt to evolving musical tastes.
Spotify’s AI initiative extends beyond playlists. The recent introduction of tools like 'Page Match' bridges the gap between digital and physical media by allowing users to scan physical book pages and jump to the corresponding section in an audiobook. The platform has also enhanced its song lyrics feature, now supporting global translations and offline viewing. These developments reflect Spotify’s broader approach to weaving AI into the user experience, content discovery, and media consumption workflows.
The company’s recent partnership with ticketing platform SeatGeek further expands the app’s functionality, allowing users to browse concert ticket links and upcoming tour dates directly within an artist’s Spotify page. Internally, co-CEO Gustav Söderström stated that software development processes at Spotify have been significantly transformed by AI, with some of their top developers not writing traditional code since December due to increased AI tool integration.
Spotify’s diversification continues as it ventures into physical book sales, now allowing users in the US and UK to purchase physical copies directly through the app, further broadening the platform’s commerce options.
These updates underscore Spotify’s commitment to leveraging artificial intelligence for product development, content curation, and expanding its suite of user-centric features across its global markets.
