MIT and Germany's Hasso Plattner Institute (HPI) have established the MIT and HPI AI and Creativity Hub, a decade-long collaboration designed to deepen joint research and educational initiatives at the intersection of artificial intelligence (AI) and creativity. The agreement was marked by a signing ceremony this week and is funded by the Hasso Plattner Foundation.

The initiative brings together expertise from MIT's Morningside Academy for Design (MAD) and Schwarzman College of Computing, as well as HPI and its foundation, to explore how AI is transforming creative processes, from design to knowledge creation. This new hub expands on earlier partnerships between the two institutions, including the HPI-MIT Research Program on Designing for Sustainability, launched in 2022.

Central to this collaboration is a shared commitment to interdisciplinary research involving AI, design, and human creativity. The effort will support joint educational programs, fellowships, and faculty exchanges, providing a platform for students and researchers on both sides of the Atlantic to collaborate on projects with potential global impact.

The collaboration begins with a two-day workshop at MIT, bringing together faculty, students, and researchers to establish priorities for the hub. According to MIT President Sally Kornbluth, the aim is to create an environment where technology and creativity intersect, enabling the next generation of innovative ideas and tools.

Rouven Westphal of the Hasso Plattner Foundation emphasized the Foundation's commitment to supporting long-term collaboration that bridges disciplines and national borders, highlighting the importance of uniting technological excellence with human-centered design.

Academic leadership from both MIT and HPI will jointly guide the research and teaching agenda for the hub, ensuring that projects reflect the interests and expertise of both institutions. HPI, based in Potsdam, Germany, is recognized for its advances in digital engineering and its leadership in design thinking—a methodology that encourages creative problem solving by focusing on human needs and experiences.

The initiative is anchored by dedicated professorships and fellowships named for Hasso Plattner, supporting faculty appointments, doctoral training, and research projects between the two campuses. Educational opportunities will include new classes, cross-institutional workshops, hackathons, and summer exchanges focused on AI and creativity.

A steering committee composed of representatives from MIT and HPI will oversee the governance of the hub and ensure continuity between institutions. The collaboration reflects both organizations' interest in understanding and shaping how AI can support creativity, knowledge creation, and societal advancement, while providing a platform for rigorous scholarly inquiry.

Dan Huttenlocher, dean of the MIT Schwarzman College of Computing, noted that the central question is not whether AI diminishes creativity, but rather how new forms of intelligence might enhance it. The overall goal, he said, is to establish a vibrant academic community that explores how AI can contribute to the creation of new ideas and knowledge across disciplines.

The Hasso Plattner Foundation has a long record of supporting innovation at the intersection of technology, design thinking, and education, contributing to the foundation of HPI and other international programs. This new partnership is intended to help both institutions shape the evolving relationship between AI and human creativity over the next decade.
