Starling Bank Introduces Agentic AI Financial Assistant in UK

Starling Bank has launched what it claims is the UK's first agentic AI-powered financial assistant. The assistant, powered by Google Gemini, allows customers to manage finances using natural language and voice commands for personalised banking tasks. This move reflects a broader trend among European fintechs adopting generative AI tools to enhance customer service and financial management.

Starling Bank has unveiled what it describes as the UK's first agentic AI financial assistant, aiming to use artificial intelligence to help its nearly five million customers better manage their day-to-day finances.

The new 'Starling Assistant' uses agentic AI—a type of artificial intelligence capable of performing tasks independently on behalf of its user. The system responds to both voice and natural language prompts, enabling customers to perform banking activities such as setting up personalised savings goals, organising bill payments, and receiving tailored financial insights.

For example, a customer planning a holiday might say, “I need to save £500 for a trip to Paris in July. How much do I need to save monthly and can you set up automatic transfers to a dedicated space?” Similarly, customers can automate their payday routines by allocating funds for groceries, bills, travel, and dining through a simple voice or text request.

Harriet Rees, Starling’s group chief information officer, stated: “It’s time to embrace a new era of banking, one that’s powered by agentic AI. At Starling, we want to encourage our customers to trust that AI can help them with money management and we’re excited to be pioneering the use of this cutting-edge technology.”

The assistant is built on Starling's proprietary technology platform, utilizing Google Gemini, a large language model, and Google Cloud technologies. Large language models (LLMs) like Gemini are AI systems trained to process and generate human-like text, which enables the conversational capabilities seen in Starling Assistant.

This is not Starling’s first move into generative AI—the bank previously launched Spending Intelligence, allowing customers to query their spending habits using natural language, and Scam Intelligence, which helps detect marketplace scams.

The adoption of generative AI tools is accelerating in financial services across Europe. Klarna deploys similar technology for customer service functions, while Netherlands-based Bunq recently launched its own AI assistant. Danish neobank Lunar is aiming for its generative AI-powered voice assistant to eventually manage around 75 percent of customer calls. Meanwhile, Revolut is exploring broader integration of AI agents to automate both customer service and sales processes.

The introduction of agentic AI assistants marks a shift in digital banking, as institutions look to leverage the latest advances in AI to enhance user experience, optimise operations, and provide more personalized financial guidance.
